6/14/07 – Thursday – 68048 – 160 – Wellsville, OH – sunny and hot – low +71 – high +86
Saw 2 groundhogs, 8 deer and many lightning bugs
Had breakfast with Tony, Joan and Olivia and took a ride over to the Homer Laughlin Ceramic plant (they were swamped with sales shoppers and Olivia had to be 16 to go in). After that, we decided it was time to pick up Tyler and hit the highway again.
Tyler, Roxanne and I stopped at the recreation of the old Fort Steuben in Steubenville Ohio but it was closed in preparation for a number of events happening this weekend – the annual festival at, and for, the fort itself; the Russian Orthodox festival and the Dean Martin festival. There was going to be a concert in the pavilion at the fort in the evening, the food was already being sold at the Russian Orthodox church a few blocks away and Deanna Martin, Dean’s daughter, was going to be attending her dad’s birthday/festival celebration event for the weekend (Dean Martin would have been 90 this year, had he lived).
We continued onto Interstate 70, through beautiful pastureland with scattered stands of trees, until we reached the Buckeye Lake KOA (Kampground of America), just east of Columbus. This lake is huge and started as part of the canal system in the early to mid-1800’s. This weekend, the campground was full of classic and rod owners who were going to an annual car show this weekend. With all the beautiful cars around, the Unimog was the one everyone was stopping by to see and ask questions about.
