6-01-07 - Thursday - 67562 – 000 – Gettysburg KOA, PA – Mostly sunny until early afternoon, then rain (and muggy all day, everyday) - low +69 - high +87

Saw squirrels and chipmunks

We toured some additional areas of the Gettysburg battlefield, notably where the first shot was fired, where the actual battle began and where General Robert E. Lee's headquarters were on July 1, 1863.

We visited the Lord Nelson's Gallery that is located in Gettysburg and viewed many prints, plates, sculptures, books and other pieces of art. Although they have a variety of subjects, the frontier and colonial pieces, with whites and Indians of the time, are the most interesting. We have received their catalog for years and always wanted to visit their gallery. It was definitely worth the stop.

This evening we had supper at the oldest building in Gettysburg. The Dobbin House was built in 1776 by Reverend Alexander Dobbin. It has served as his family's home (he and his wife had 19 children), the Reverend's Classical School (the first of its kind this far east during this time period), the first stop north of the Mason-Dixon Line on the Underground Railroad (where runaway slaves were hidden - in this case, between the first and second floors and behind a shelf that hid the opening to their room) and a field hospital for Union and Confederate soldiers during the three-day Gettysburg battle, sometimes in the line of, and hit by, gunfire. It is now operated as an authentic colonial restaurant and tavern by a local family. And the food, and service, was excellent.

This evening brought a big thunder and lightning storm that really poured early on, but just tapered down to a steady rain on our RV roof. We always end up with a few different bugs that follow us into the RV at night (because of our lights), but one of our guests tonight is the pretty moth pictured above. Thank goodness for our screens to keep the majority out.
